The Hessian State Library in Wiesbaden houses the central legacy of Hildegard of Bingen – The Giant Codex (Riesencodex). Already during her lifetime or only a short time later, the most important scriptures of her works – probably even by Hildegard herself – were compiled and united in this 481 pages long and 15kg heavy work. Until 1632, the Codex was situated at its place of origin, the monastery on the Rupertsberg near Bingen founded by Hildegard, and was taken to the affiliate monastery in Eibingen to save it from plundering by the Swedish in the same year. As a consequence of the secularization of the monastery, it finally came to Wiesbaden in 1814, where it has been kept in the State Library since 1948. Just recently, the entire manuscript was digitalized and can be viewed on the homepage of the Hessian State Library.
