Since 774, Kirchheim is mentioned in historical sources as the oldest village with a parish church in the surroundings. The St. Peter’s Church was built in the 12th century, presumably at the place where the former parish church had been built. Due to the nobility of the Lords of Bolanden, who ruled over the village during the High Middle Ages, the name Kirchheimbolanden developed over the course of the time.

Hildegard of Bingen had a close relationship with Werner II of Bolanden, who apparently was one of the most important sponsors of the monastery at the Rupertsberg and whose son became the sponsor child of Guibert of Gembloux, Hildegard’s secretary. The name of Werner II of Bolanden can still be read in the contemporary foundation engraving at the preserved refectory of the Bolanden monastery in Rothenkirchen. How close the relations of Hildegard with Kirchheim-Bolanden were, can be seen by the circumstance that the Abbess of the Rupertsberg held a public admonishing sermon there in 1170. In a letter handed down in the letter collection of Hildegard, a cleric of Kirchheim asked for the written version of the apparently sensational sermon, which was also preserved.
